The sun was beaming on models carrying – and wearing – blooming florals and fruits as they strolled down a cobbled pathway on the bank of the Seine in Paris this week for the arresting Haute Couture AW23 presentation.

Hallmarks of Chanel’s signature tweed garments were present – and the Eiffel Tower served as a mighty backdrop – but this collection was rife with a narrative that nodded to a whimsical, playful French girl sartorial wardrobe. The collection was a homage to Parisian culture and ‘The Parisienne’ as the creative director Virginie Viard mentioned in the show notes.

From a stunning Chanel bride closing the show to a star-studded front row including Camila Morrone and Vanessa Paradis, here’s everything to know about the show.

Attendees gathered on the bank of the river, which flows through Paris, to witness Viard’s latest collection. An idyllic view of the city and saccharine painted cobblestones transformed the iconic bank as models including Mona Tougaard, Amelia Gray, and Caroline de Maigret brought Viard’s sequin-flecked, tweed and graphic-laden line to life, representing a myriad of delicate yet powerful Parisian archetypal.

No one brings out the stars quite like a Chanel show – and this season was no different. The bona fide poster-child for French girl style, Vanessa Paradis was seen on the front row in a printed top and leggings with futuristic metallic boots boasting the signature Chanel black toe cap.

Kendrick Lamar offered a masterclass in French style oozing cool and opted for a pair of trousers with the double ‘C’ emblem emblazoned across, a boxy white jacket, draping pearls and a cap with a silk scarf tied across. Daisy Jones & The Six-star Camila Morrone mixed in a 1970s vibe by choosing a grey one-sleeve top, matching skirt, and black patent Go-Go boots. The pièce de résistance? Her dainty Chanel purse small enough to fit a lip gloss and nothing more.

Viard’s collection was undisputedly a celebration of the modern French woman with a reimagination of classic house codes. A model donning a fire-red boxy tweed button-up jacket with shin-grazing pinstripe trousers and Mary Janes was a moment to remember thanks to her canine accomplice. A gleaming gold foiled skirt suit could be spotted from a mile away, floral sequins on tiered dresses and glimmering garments with fruit appliqué and motifs injected some fun into the line, plus, a Chanel bride closed the couture show in a coquette chiffon dress with a collar enveloped with bows and white Mary Jane heels which evoked a particularly timeless feel.
