Ossie Clark to close

Iconic label Ossie Clark, relaunched in 2008 by Mark Worth of fashion industry site WGSN with designer Avsh Alom Gur at the helm, will not continue to show at London Fashion week, or produce a collection.

The label rose to fame in the 1960s when designer Ozzie Clark and his then wife, illustrator and textile designer Celia Birtwell's combination of cutting edge design and feminine prints wowed the international fashion scene. Their clothes were seen on everyone from Twiggy to Marianne Faithfull but the label was forced to close in the 1980s due to bankruptcy.

It is now one of the most highly sought after vintage labels around the world, with collectors including Kate Moss. Emma Watson also recently wore an Ossie Clark vintage dress to the London premiere of the sixth Harry Potter film.

It was hoped that fashion's obsession with the cult status of the label would be enough to make the 2008 relaunch a success, but last night the company announced that due to 'market conditions, developing the business has been challenging and the decision has been made to cease trading'.
