Last year was all about all things girly and cute. From 'Girl Math' to 'Girl Dinner', it seemed there was a collective agreement that being a woman was just too darn hard, and we'd rather stay in a state of adolescence, or even better, childhood, eternally.

But now in 2024, while we might not be ready to get rid of all things totally adorable, it looks like, sartorially at least, we're ready to face the positively adult music. Seen on the BAFTAs red carpet, the Hollywood stars of today and their stylists were less looking to the edgy off-beat fashion of today's youth, and instead the sultry and sexy screen sirens of Hollywood's past.

Rosamund Pike's powder blue Christian Dior gown was a clear reference to the brand's history-making 'New Look' shape, while Carey Mulligan's black, sculpted dress from the same fashion house, paired with her red lip and side-parted hair similarly offered a 1950s feel.

The Zone Of Interest actor Sandra Hüller's custom Louis Vuitton dress was all about 1940s glamour, while ELLE UK's own digital cover star, Phoebe Dynevor, was a modern Marilyn Monroe in an ivory silk, halterneck gown from the same fashion house.

Perhaps most surprisingly, however, were the style stars we've come to expect much more avant-garde and modish looks from also opting for this vintage style. The Bear star, Ayo Edebiri, for example, who has recently been a cool customer in The Row suiting and 3D moulded leather from Louis Vuitton, kept things classic in a salmon-pink sculpted gown, elbow length gloves and feather stole, custom made by Bottega Veneta.

Likewise, Taylor Russell, who wore a metal jacket to sit front row at Loewe, was serving major Josephine Baker vibes in showgirl feathers (also by Loewe).

And, don't even get us started on Dua Lipa's complete classic, diaphanous, Grecian-style gown.

Whether it's news of the recession or the realisation the Golden Age of Hollywood started around 100 years ago, it looks like all the stars got the memo we're growing up, and looking back.
