We've all been there: your inside voice lets out a deep groan while you force yourself to keep a fixed smile, listening to yet another 'I don't want to miss a thing' first dance.

Other regular offenders are Elvis 'Can't Help Falling in Love' and '(I've Had) The Time of My Life' by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

Weddings are conspicuously cheesy at the best of times, without adding a large helping of musical gorgonzola.

So if you fancy yourself to be the cool kind of wedding-thrower, you might want to consider one of the options on this list instead.

Trust us, your guests will thank you.

1. Talking Heads - 'This Must Be the Place'

With lyrics like: 'And you love me till my heart stops, Love me till I'm dead' this definitely sits within the realms of love-songdom, but it's cute and unconventional too.

2. The Black Keys - 'The Only One'

One for the Indie rockers out there, The Black Keys have written a modern love anthem, with refrains like this:

'You're the only one

You're the only one

I'm so wrapped up I'm in a daze

Hoping this is just a phase

But when all is said and done

I know you are still the one.'

3. Salt'n'Pepa - 'Whatta Man'

Not keen on a slow dance and allergic to displays of soppy romance, this one is for the jokers and the fun-makers.

4. ESG - 'My Love For You'

A firm favourite with ELLE's Fashion Features Director Kenya Hunt.

5. Lynyrd Skynyrd - 'Simple Man'

Slightly sombre in tone, for sure, but this Lynyrd Skynyrd song is delightfully simple in its message:

'Take your time, don't live too fast

Troubles will come and they will pass

Go find a woman, and you'll find love'

6. Penny & The Quarters - 'You And Me'

7. Depeche Mode - 'Enjoy The Silence'

Great for a retro vibe, plus this is a great sing-a-long song for those that long to belt something out without going full Justin Bieber medley.

' All I ever waaaaanted, all I ever neeeeeded, is here in mmyyyyyy aaaaarms...'

8. The Cure - 'Friday I'm In Love'

Yep, a little over-used, but it's cute and perfect for Friday nuptuals.

9. Sam & Bill - 'For Your Love'

10. The Lumineers - 'Ho Hey'

This is probably going to turn into the cheesy wedding song of the 21st century, so get in there and use it quickly before it hits peak popularity!
