Being ELLE’s production editor, I guess it’s fitting that my organisational skills have translated into planning our wedding. But even I didn’t think we’d get everything firmed up so fast.
However, a number of factors were in our favour: Mark, the groom-to-be, is equally organised (he has even created a wedding spreadsheet); we didn’t want a long engagement; we knew we both wanted a small, intimate wedding in Scotland, so that both our immediate families could attend (mine are based in Aberdeen, Mark’s in Edinburgh), followed by a party in London at a later date.
Initially, we thought we wanted a registry office ceremony, followed by dinner at a local restaurant. However, I quickly realised that I wanted the venue where we said our vows to be a bit more special. Plus, the place where we wanted to have the dinner, The Witchery (we’re both massive foodies), didn’t hire out private rooms at the weekend.
Then Mark found Prestonfield House. Owned by the man behind The Witchery, James Thomson, it was built in 1687 as the home of Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, and has been lovingly restored as an opulent and historic boutique hotel. Its location at the foot of Arthur’s Seat only adds to its grandeur.
We instantly knew it was the place we wanted to get married. It was easy for our families to get to (including the wee Scottish grannies!) and, alongside catering for big, lavish weddings, also smaller rooms suitable for more intimate ceremonies.
Plus, seeing as we’re getting married in October this year, the oak-paneled interiors, with their red velvet sofas and roaring fires (I can see many a dram of whisky being consumed around them as the day draws to a close) seem fitting for an autumnal wedding. Sold, to one very happy – and excited – bride to be.
