First things first, WTF is a 'banana bun'?

If you Google it, you're likely to be led down a rabbit warren of banana cakes and other forms of pastry, which will probably make you hungry, but won't solve your 'need-to-look-chic-in-30-seconds' conundrum.

However, if you delve a littler deeper into the internet (aka Pinterest), you will discover that the beauty world has just coined the phrase 'banana bun' as a new, must-have hairstyle, which has totally confused, well, everybody.

So, what exactly is it? The terms 'french twist' and 'loose chignon' are getting thrown around quite a bit. However, we're not one for beating around the bush: it's basically a glorified, messy low bun on a slant.

To be fair this may sound easy, but as with many other 'just woke up like this' sort of styles, they can be a lot more difficult to pull off than you might imagine.

As for it's name, the 'banana' part of the bun refers to the angled and slightly curved shape of the knot, as opposed to a traditional round 'bun'.

Alternatively, it could be that the banana refers to the fact that you twist the hair into itself like a chignon or French twist, before you secure it in a low messy bun at the nape of the neck in a vague banana shape.

However, the good news is we've all been using this hairstyle for years. It's our go-to for days when we just don't give AF, or pressed the snooze button one too many times.

At least now we don't have to get hair guilt when we walk into the office to see co-workers with their perfectly pre-curled locks. Our lazy approach is now equally as stylish and we spent an extra half an hour snoozing, so who's the real winner here?
