Yesterday, hearts across the world melted as Prince William and Prince George walked hand-in-hand through the gates of the four-year-old's new school, London's Thomas's Battersea, for the little tyke's first day of school.

Wearing navy blue Bermuda shorts, a matching jumper, a baby blue shirt, and 'laceless' shoes, the young prince looked nervous as he was escorted into the school by his father and Helen Haslem, the head of lower school at Thomas's.

Following his son's first day at school, Prince William collected his firstborn in the afternoon and said George's first day had gone 'well', after his schoolbag revealed he would be known as George Cambridge at school.

'It went well. There was one other parent who had more of an issue with their children so I was quite pleased I wasn't the one,' he added.

It's certainly been a big week for the royal family, following the news on Monday that Kate Middleton was expecting her third child.

Unfortunately Kate was unable to take her son to school for his first day as she is currently suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum - severe vomiting in pregnancy.

At the Police Chief's National Mental Health and Policing Conference on Tuesday, the Duke of Cambridge revealed his wife was doing well but was feeling the strain of the early staged of pregnancy: 'There's not much sleep going on at the moment.'

The Sun reports the prince would've spent his first day getting to know his teachers, adults, and other children, as well as finding his classroom peg (we've all been there).
