The announcement comes just hours after the royal household revealed that Kate will join her husband William on an overseas visit to Scandinavia early next year, when the Duchess will be well into her pregnancy.

The April due date ties in to recent predictions on when we might expect the latest addition to the Cambridge family to arrive.

When news of Kate's pregnancy broke on 4 September, many people assumed the royals had been waiting until the recommended three-month stage before announcing the pregnancy. This led many to believe that the baby would be due sometime in April 2018.

However, at a recent charity event, Prince William also dropped a hint that his wife might be further on in her pregnancy than people thought.

During the visit to Spitalfields Crypt Trust, a charity that supports those dealing with homelessness and addiction in East London, William told one midwife: 'All the best with the midwifery, I may see you sooner than you think.'

Bring on April!
