NY latest: Michael Kors

This season Michael Kors celebrates 30 years in the fashion industry. That's three decades during which the designer has grown from a Long Island kid who missed his high school prom to visit Studio 54 for the first time, to an international figure with 200 stores who has dressed everyone from Michelle Obama to Jennifer Lopez. As he joked before the show, he's been designing so long that he can now use his own name as an adjective, describing the AW11 collection as being "very Michael Kors". In case you somehow didn't know, that means a very modern luxury involving things like double-face cashmere and crocodile skin and evening gowns flimsy enough to fit into a handbag. And if all that sounds a bit uptight, it isn't at all.

In front of an A-list front row including Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, to a hi-octane disco soundtrack, Kors sent out a stellar collection of clothes that embodied nothing less than desire. Simple, straightforward and perfectly easy, this was the kind of stuff you'd snatch up should you, say, marry a millionaire (like, say, Michael Douglas). From the opening outfit - a slim grey midi coat with long, loose trousers and crisp white shirt - to embellished jersey dresses hanging from silver necklaces, every piece was, at the same time, indulgent and purposeful. "It's luxury but it's practical," Kors explained afterwards. Empires have been built on less.
