Emmanuel Macron has started proceedings to revoke Harvey Weinstein's Legion of Honour in the wake of the numerous sexual harassment and assault allegations made against the producer.

'I asked the council to carry out a disciplinary procedure,' said the French president, referring to the body that governs the awards, on French television channel TF1. 'These acts are not benefitting of the honour.'

France's highest honour is generally given to French citizens, but every year a limited number of the accolades are bestowed on internationals. Weinstein was presented with the honour in 2012 by former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

WWD reports that the award is only removed if the recipient commits a crime or behaves in a way that is damaging to France.

Weinstein has been accused of multiple counts of rape (which he denies), as well as numerous sexual harassment and assault claims.
