There’s only one sartorial solution for temperamental trans-seasonal weather, and that’s a versatile summer jacket. The best are made from lightweight fabrics for easy layering on cool Spring days, while remaining breathable in an impromptu heatwave (or stuffy trip on public transport).

So, what exactly is the perfect summer jacket? When choosing the perfect style, there are five classic silhouettes that prove to be timeless. 'Of course, the obvious cover-up for those in-between days will always be the trench,' says Roberta Schroeder, ELLE UK’s senior ecommerce editor. 'A good one will be light enough not to induce a sweat on the underground, yet substantial enough to hang beautifully and keep chilly breezes at bay. My long-loved check Burberry trench is perhaps the wisest investment I've ever made. I’ve brought it out every Spring since buying it almost a decade ago.'

A louche, oversized blazer is an equally elevated option that’s ideal for your workwear wardrobe while making a seamless transition to the evening: either wear yours as a suit or slipped over a slinky dress. The fit of the season is undoubtedly relaxed through the body and shoulders, with airy cotton and linen fabrics a wise investment as we ease into warmer days. A sharp utility jacket is also a wise choice. Often cut from cool cotton in a minimal design, they're brilliantly versatile and won't ever go out of style.

If you’re after a more casual option, look to a classic denim jacket: and yes, this season, double-denim is very much on the cards. And for something that'll lend a boyish slant to staple looks, the bomber jacket reigns: you can't go wrong with an MA-1-inspired shade of green, which looks jut as good over neutral cargo trousers as it does a floral midi dress.

Here, see the summer jackets to solve all those trans-seasonal dressing conundrums.
