Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Marion Cotillard, Samuel L Jackson and Sarah Jessica Parker all brought a touch of Hollywood sparkle to the starriest red carpet the capital has seen in a while. British designers took centre stage, with Hathaway looking statuesque in a floor-skimming Burberry number.
Black was the new black as far as arrivals were concerned, with Lawrence and Cotillard breaking the spell in lilac and canary yellow Dior respectively. Chastain caused an apt splash in cobalt blue Roland Mouret, and Dame Helen Mirren's new pink rinse ensured her plenty of paparazzi attention.
Ben Affleck, meanwhile, was darling of the ceremony, scooping both Best Director and Best Film for Argo. He also narrowly missed out on Leading Actor to Daniel Day-Lewis, who gave an adorable, tongue-in-cheek speech about having practiced for his win with an applause track at home every time he got up from his chair.
But the question on ELLE's lips, of course, is: how will they measure up to tomorrow's ELLE Style Awards? Watch this space.
