Coming four years after the death of the legendary designer, this new production will be helmed by French director Jalil Lespert, who sought out and received Bergés approval for the film and got it. The first person to have done so.
I have often been proposed to make a fiction film about Yves and myself Bergé told French film website www.lefilmfrancais.com. I had never been convinced of the different projects. Jalil Lespert came to see me with his sensitivity, his enthusiasm, creative vision, I realised that I had before me the director [who] can tell this story. I said yes.
Saint Laurent met Bergé in 1958, when he was still designing for the House of Dior. Four years later, they launched YSLs eponymous label and went on to create Le Smoking (a tuxedo for women), and pioneer the ready-to-wear movement. By 1977 they were living on separate lives on separate floors of their Parisian home, though still a couple personally and professionally. They remained so until Saint Laurents death in June 2008, following his battle with brain cancer.
Lespert's film comes after L'amour Fou (Crazy Love), which documented Bergé's grief following YSL's death and the subsequent auction of the art collection. And there is another film in the pipeline about YSL by Bertrand Bonello but it will focus more on the launch of the brand, and does not have Bergés all-important stamp of approval.
There are no details, as yet, about the films release date, nor who will take on the lead roles but we have our fingers crossed for Guillaume Canet (The Beach) and Romain Duris (The Heartbreaker) as the leads serious Franco eye candy.
