Today Boots stores introduce new paper carrier bags replacing plastic ones as standard.

A first for a national pharmacy, health and beauty retailer, it has moved to paper carrier bags in 53 Boots stores across the UK, with a roll out to all 2,485 stores by early 2020. According to a press release from the company, this will remove over 900 tonnes of plastic from Boots store operations each year.

Made from unbleached, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified recycled brown paper, the bags are printed with water-based inks so they can be easily recycled at home.

With profits being donated to BBC Children in Need – Boots’ long-term charity partner, the bags cost 5p, 7p, or 10p in either small, medium or large sizes.

Other retailers reducing the impact of their business on the environment include Morrisons, which has also introduced paper bags, and Waitrose which is piloting a packaging-free produce service.

In beauty, refillable products are proving a popular option to increase sustainability. Earlier this month mass retail skincare brand, Olay – the skincare company owned by consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble – announced the launch of a moisturiser sold with a refillable pod.
