Alongside singlehandedly reviving the belly chain (albeit a monogrammed pearl Chanel one slung across the abs of Gigi Hadid), Virginie Viard's debut Metiers d'Art show for the legendary fashion house just served up 80s Princess Diana as its latest beauty muse.
Recreating Coco Chanel's mythical mirrored art deco apartment in the Grand Palais, Viard looked to the past for inspiration before giving the iconic Chanel designs an unexpected 2019 twist. Archive tweed suit linings gave life to purple tie-dye twin sets, slogan sweatshirts replaced box jackets, whilst the classic monochrome tux was reborn in silver disco sequins.
Over on hair and make-up, legendary hairstylist and the man behind Princess Diana's timeless pixie crop, Sam McKnight, and Chanel's Global Creative Make-Up and Colour Designer, Lucia Pica, took on the old-meets-new directive, serving up the throwback beauty look of our party season dreams.
Confirming Princess Di-esque black velvet hairbands as the only hair accessory worth wearing (ideally as far back on your head as physically possible) was Kaia Gerber, whilst elsewhere McKnight twisted (quite literally) the age old chignon by slicking it back into a low ponytail, for a grungey wet look finish.
On make-up, Pica adorned models with crystal-embellished eyes and vinyl shine wine-stained lips. 'Because it's a Metiers d'Art show I wanted to play a lot with texture and materials so I've used crystals on the inner corners of the eyes for one of the looks,' said Pica backstage.
'Then there is another look that's got a bit more of a feminine twist and a little more sophistication, it's about this burgundy glossy mouth.'
For a final nod to the 80s-meets-Teenies obsession with logomania, Viard worked with nail artist Jenny Longworth to create a monochrome manicure complete with the quintessential Chanel double Cs.
