While the world is in lockdown, it's easy to get stuck in a news rut, overwhelmed by the current situation and more than a bit stressed out.

Which is where beauty and self-care come in. While we can't make it to the nail bar or yoga studio in real life, we can look to our own beauty stashes for a bit of DIY pampering. A notion even the A-list are taking on board.

'I do need to get my nails done - that’s something that’s been bothering me', admitted mini supermodel and AW20's queen of the runway, Kaia Gerber, when ELLE caught up with her (over the phone of course). 'I’ve got gels on and they’re quite grown out. But there are worse things going on right now!'

More used to having her hair and make-up transformed by the likes of Pat McGrath and Sam McKnight on a weekly basis, how is the 18-year-old member of model royalty adapting her beauty routine to lockdown?

Read on for Kaia Gerber's seven beauty essentials bringing her joy right now...

1.Getting Ready To Stay In

'For me, it's been really important to get ready every day even though I'm not going anywhere. That's been one of the biggest things keeping me sane - having that routine.

'It can be really easy when you’re staying home every day to fall into that cycle of just staying in your pyjamas so I'm just getting myself out of bed, showering and doing my skincare routine.

'I will, at least once a week, try to get completely ready even though I'm not going anywhere. I do my hair, I do my make-up, I put on jeans which is a crazy thing to do, unbelievable in quarantine. Even just putting on a dress for like two hours makes you feel better.

'We did a family dinner the other night for passover and my mum and I were like, "Let's put on dresses, let's get ready", even thought it's just our family here, and it felt so good. I just don’t want to feel so far removed from what normal life was and what it will be again.'

    2. Charcoal Cleansers And Face Masks

'I do love a face mask! There’s something very therapeutic about doing them but I do think it’s important to not overdo it. When I first discovered them I was doing a different one every day which probably isn’t beneficial for your skin! I love a charcoal cleanser as well.

I just don’t want to feel so far removed from what normal life was and what it will be again.

'Since we’re sitting inside all the time and we’re not getting fresh air it’s an adjustment for every part of you but also your skin. The biggest thing for me has been letting my skin take a break from make-up because when I'm modelling I'm constantly getting my make-up done and taken off and that can be really hard on your skin, so I’ve been letting my skin breathe.'

    3. Marc Jacobs 'Daisy' Perfume

'For me it's such a force of habit to put 'Daisy' on everyday because I just wear it all the time. When I get out of the shower I don’t do a lot of things to get ready but spritzing some perfume is one of them - I just put some on everyday, I don’t even think about it! That’s also helped to keep me sane right now.'

    4. DIY Highlights And Haircuts

'I’ve been trying to stay strong and not cut my hair because a couple of months ago I had it cut into more of a men’s haircut, which I'm now in the process of growing out so it looks kind of like a mullet, but I figure there’s never going to be a good time for it to have an awkward phase so it may as well be now!

'I'm absolutely tempted to cut a fringe. When I saw that Audrey Hepburn Instagram video... I’ve been trying to avoid picking up the scissors at all costs because I know myself and it will happen.

'I haven’t cut it yet but I have given myself highlights - I knew it was going to happen, it was that or bangs so… But I don’t recommend doing it yourself, I will say that! I don’t know how damaged my hair is now, I’m assuming pretty damaged because I’d never dyed my hair before, but I figured no one’s seeing me right now so why not!'

    5. Healthy Home-Cooking

'Stress is one of the biggest contributors to bad skin and I genuinely believe that your skin relies on how you’re feeling internally, so I’ve been trying to eat super healthy while I'm in quarantine. It's so easy to get bored and snack and eat loads of junk food so I’ve been trying to eat healthy because I think thats when my skin looks the best.

I'm now in the process of growing my hair out so it looks kind of like a mullet.

'I’ve taught myself how to cook which has been really great because normally I don’t have the time, so it’s been fun and therapeutic. I've got really good at roasting vegetables - any vegetable! That’s my thing. I’m making food for my whole family right now so I’ll cook a load for them.'

    6. Rainbow Make-Up

'I'm just not very good at doing my make-up! When Tommy (Dorfman) did my make-up I was so impressed. I'm terrified of colour, so when he did rainbow eyeshadow I was like "Oh my god what are you doing?" But I loved it! I wish I had the artistic confidence to wear yellow eyeshadow. While I don’t have Pat McGrath here to do it for me!

'I learnt how to do make-up from my mum and we both have a pretty similar toned down aesthetic. My all time favourite beauty product is YSL Touche Eclat, which I swear by for illuminating your skin. It’s super light, it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing make-up - even on the days when I'm not wearing make-up ill still put that under my eyes and it’ll make me feel like a human again.'

    7. Books Before Bed

'I haven’t been sleeping a lot lately with all the crazy things that are happening. I really try to read every night rather than watching things on my phone because I think that reading can make you tired, whereas a screen can stimulate you. There's an endless amount of content on the internet and it's so easy to find yourself in a deep news hole right now.

At the moment my book club is reading Bonjour Tristesse by Francoise Sagan - it was written when she was 18 and it's about growing up. I read it for the first time when I was 18 and I think it's a really great book for any young girl to read.'
