There were three women on my bus this morning all applying make-up. One began by putting in her contact lenses (?!), the other was busy pencilling in her brows while the third was applying nail varnish. Now, is it just me or do all these things require a certain amount of precision which is not usually achievable on a bus that has to regularly deal with deep potholes and sleeping policemen? As I watched in fascination I started to wonder what the less steady-handed of us could get away with doing on the bus ride to work:

Dark lips are a huge trend for AW and luckily a simple stain is enough to get you working the look. No precision required, all you need is a great lipstick (I love Super Lustrous Black Cherry, £7.29, by Revlon) and a finger to smudge it on to your lips.

A touch of blush is sometimes the only thing that makes me look alive in the mornings and Topshop’s Lip and Cheek Stain in Bitten Berry, £6 is brilliant for this. Press a tiny blob between your fingers and pat into the apples of your cheeks (I’ve even been known to do this while walking and talking on the phone, it’s that easy).

Tinted moisturiser is pretty foolproof and unlike foundation you don’t need a mirror to check for unslightly smears or blending mishaps. My favourite is MAC’s Studio Moisture Tint, £19 which melts into skin like a regular moisturiser but gives sheer, even coverage.

If the same women are on my bus tomorrow I might be tempted to share my pearls of wisdom...
