Other than going back to work and not having a daily Piña Colada, one of the most annoying things about coming back to reality after a holiday is just how quickly your tan fades. We’ve all been there: you’re golden and glowing whilst sat on the beach and the moment you step off the plane, your skin is dull and three shades lighter.

So what can you do to make your tan last longer? Well, we’ve spoken to the experts and rounded up the best tanning hacks, so you can stay bronzed all year around.

How To Make Your Tan Last Longer

1. Prep

Just like changing your currency and booking your travel insurance, you need to plan ahead with tanning. 'For the days leading up to the tan, keep your skin extremely moisturised' says Camila Pierotti, Founding Partner and Lead of Product Innovation at Sol de Janeiro. It's also key to exfoliate before, to have any even surface.

2. Moisturise

The key to making your tan last longer, whether real or faux, is moisturising. Look for rich body butters, silky oils and hyaluronic-acid infused lotions that’ll really feed your skin. 'Always keep you skin extra moisturised before, during and after tanning' says Pierotti, 'because the sun dries out your skin.'

After-sun lotions are great at giving sun-parched skin a dose of healthy hydration so keep applying it daily once you’re home.

3. Cool Down

Showering in crazy hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause it to dry out. And we all know that dry skin = flaky tan. Keep your shower temperature down to extend the life of your tan.

For extra tanning points, use a moisturising shower cream to keep skin supple and hydrated.

4. Prevent Peeling

Ok, so technically this point is more important before you tan, but it’s still definitely worth a mention. If you burn, your skin is likely to peel, and once you start peeling you can pretty much wave sayonara to your sun-kissed glow. Wear factor 30 sun cream or higher on holiday and you’ll keep your tan for way longer once you’re home.

'I recommend applying SPF all over your body before putting on your bikini or clothes' says Pierotti, 'that way if anything moves around, your skin will be protected and you avoid burning and ruining a tan!'

    5. Exfoliate

We get that it sounds counter-intuitive, but if you’re really wanting your tan to last (and fade gradually, rather than in patches) then exfoliating is mega important. Dead skin cells that sit on the surface of your skin could be dulling your glow, so you want to gently slough these off to show off your sun-kissed tan underneath.

Added to that, the melanin in your skin cells (what actually makes your skin look tanned) isn't affected by scrubbing, as it's in your epidermis which isn't affected by exfoliating or shaving.

    6. Hydrate

Yep you guessed it. As with every other beauty hack out there, drinking water can extend the longevity of your tan. Water keeps the skin healthy, supple and most importantly, hydrated, so make sure you’re getting your 2 litres a day.

    7. Illuminate

Feel like your tan has lost its glow? Try an illuminating body lotion or oil to give your bod an instant boost of radiance.

    Dior Solar The Self-Tanning Gel

If you're in the market for a high-fashion tan that wouldn't look out of place backstage at PFW, Dior's self-tanning water is for you. The super-fine mist diffuses evenly for a non-streaky application, ensuring a result that's more weekend in St. Tropez than summer season on Ibiza.

    Super Glow Hyaluronic Self-Tan Serum
Tan Luxe Super Glow Hyaluronic Self-Tan Serum

There are plenty of facial tanning drops on the market now, but this is the bottle that started the stampede, and it still hasn't been matched.

The silky formula inside is a skin hydrator first and a fake tanner second: what you get is essentially a hyaluronic-acid serum that happens to bronze your complexion as it plumps and smooths.

Apply it every day until you've reached your desired level of glow, then pare back to bi-weekly top-ups.

Self Tan Purity Vitamins Bronzing Water Body Mist
St.Tropez Self Tan Purity Vitamins Bronzing Water Body Mist
    Now 25% Off

Ignore all the 'purity' spiel on the front of this one: you're not here for the vitamins it purportedly contains. You're here because this watery mist applies evenly, dries without stickiness, and develops over the course of a day into a beautifully believable glow. For anyone after a beginners bronze, this is your best choice.

There are plenty of buzzy new tanning formulas out there, but many don't stand up to their promises. Bondi Sands' unique 'foaming water', however, delivers the glowiest, most believable tan after one quick application.

There's a bit of a knack to getting the best results: use a mitt, and be quick to blend the product, as it dries quicker than most. But trust us: you'll be left with the most even, radiant tan that never turns orangey and fades on its own accord without those dreaded scaly patches.
