We go for the future-forecasting, and we love spying on the backstage products we’ll see before they’re launched to the public, but the more we talk to the superstar hairstylists backstage at New York Fashion Week, the more we realise that you are NOTHING this season if you're not squirting retro mousse into your ‘do.

The 80’s throwback product of choice is making a return to the runway, so it might be time to dust off your can - in fact, wait, please buy a new one. That stuff probably isn’t going to do its best job past its sell by date.

And trust me, you'll want to add this surprising style-superbooster to your repertoire, here's why...

Mousse has had a French girl overhaul

Eugene Souleiman told us he was after a ‘french sexy bourgeois thing’ for the hair backstage at Khaite AW19. Now that he’s mentioned it, we'd quite like a french sexy bourgeois thing too.

‘You need mousse. Mousse makes it sexy, because it gives that slightly kind of dirty texture.’

And the secret to getting it right, should you also want to go french sexy (you should) is to tip your head back and blowdry it in. ‘Tilting your head back makes the style more fluid and natural, but it still holds.’

    Even ballerinas use mousse

Hairstylist Bob Recine created ‘Supersonic Ballerina Buns’ for the Brandon Maxwell show, so called because he used the Dyson Supersonic to blowdry mousse into the sleeked back roots before tying a tight pony, then re-smoothing and retying.

Why the mousse? ‘It makes the hair super-flat, a better sillhouette’.

    It's seriously versatile

Back to Eugene again and his mousse moment at Dion Lee, where girls had ‘an air of strictness with an air of romance’.

The mousse in the roots, with comb marks showing, made hair feel tougher because it gives a matte shine, like a satin paint finish. Eugene told us, ‘I love a mousse, it’s the most versatile product for a natural finish with a tougher, sharper look. It’s my product of the season.'
