New York Fashion Week is often a jumble of emerging trends; we’re not yet sure what direction the looks will be going, what we’ll be seeing on the shelves of our favourite brands in a few months, picking up to put on ourselves in fact.
But sometimes a moment happens that cuts through and lights up our backstage lives.
Rodarte was exactly that. Set in a graveyard in the pouring rain, with a backstage area in the church itself only added to the romance.
Make-up artist James Kaliardos was inspired by a Picasso exhibition at The Tate and used primary colours to create soft geometric shapes on the face.
There were three looks, using NARS Single Eyeshadow in Domination, Baby Jane and Duoro (bright pink, aqua blue and yellow respectively), all combined with velvety Powermatte Pigment in Dont Stop.

To ensure no hard edges Kaliardos used a soft flat brush to place the colour on the eyes. He told us when using brights like this to use a smudge proof primer to make the colour pop, whilst also prepping the eyelid so your natural oils don’t gather the shadow in different places.
The result was a celebratory and surprising complement to the hair. We say ‘hair’, it seems too underwhelming a description for hairstylist Odille Gilbert’s creations.
Her reference was simply ‘romance’. She told us ‘There are no rules. Every girl is different’. Think armfuls of fresh roses woven into tousled tresses with swathes of pastel-toned tulle and Rodarte's now signature gold and silver floral hair pins.
Every girl was joyous, beautiful, momentous. Now this is what you call ‘putting on a show’.
