If there's one brand that has 'ethereal summer solstice fairy witch', aka our go-to festival look, totally down, it's Preen by Thornton Bregazzi.

Known for their effortless take on modern romantic dressing, the designer duo are basically responsible for every summer wedding guest trend to hit our wardrobes for the past two decades.

This time? They've turned their talents to the only festival beauty look you need this year.

Setting up home at the V&A for one day only as part of a summer solstice-themed Fashion In Motion retrospective, Preen sent models storming down the runway (complete with pressed flower stained glass windows) adorned with the prettiest hair and make-up ever.

'I'm creating two looks that represent the dichotomy of femininity,' explained Global Senior Artist for MAC Cosmetics, Dominic Skinner, backstage. 'The first look is very raw with a waft of witchiness. I'm drawing pagan symbols on the models' fingers, foreheads, all over their face, it depends on the look. I wanted them to feel uncomfortably placed - primal.'

How to recreate the tattoo-like look? 'I'm using liquid eyeliner to draw the symbols wherever I feel they need to go,' Dominic told ELLE. 'Then on the eyes I'm using a coffee coloured pencil and blending an ochre shade from the MAC Art Library over the lids. Ochre was one of the first ever colours used to paint with so it feels appropriately primal.'

Skinner's second look was a complete 180, embracing the exuberance of a joyous May Day celebration. In stark contrast to the graphic scribblings, Skinner mixed pressed flowers with hand drawn blooms for a painterly collage effect.

'I want it to feel really fresh and pretty compared to the other look that's earthy and powerful,' explained Skinner. 'I'm using the new MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish highlighter palettes as eyeshadow - the lilac shade gives this otherworldly illumination.'

Victorian-style rags woven through mismatched plaits completed Preen's take on a midsummer celebration.
