Fashion Awards 2023: An Exclusive Behind The Scenes Look With Kate Moss

With a career that’s seen her front international campaigns and magazine covers, walk the most famous runways, and take to the red carpet at some of the most illustrious events the world over, it’s only natural that Kate Moss has her getting ready routine down to a fine art. And, for last night’s Fashion Awards, which took place at London's Royal Albert Hall, ELLE UK had a sneak peek into the supermodel’s backstage beauty rituals.

‘I love to have a facial if there’s time - especially when I’m in London and I can squeeze in an appointment,’ Moss tells ELLE UK. ‘If I’ve just flown in and I'm short on time, I use a quick and easy trick – putting my face in a bowl of iced water and cucumber slices.' Aside from DIY cryotherapy hacks, pre-red carpet rituals are also a must (cups of tea, included), she says. ‘I love listening to music while I’m getting my hair and make-up done. No playlist is complete without Elton John.'

For the star-studded event, the model and multi-hyphenate paired a vintage black dress and cape with an equally nostalgic beauty old faithful – bold eyeliner, and lots of it. Rather than the more traditional route (cat eye, winged liner, liquid, et al), Moss opted for a grungier, Noughties-inspired waterline look. ‘To create Kate’s dramatic eye look, we paired Charlotte’s Hollywood Exaggereyes Eyeliner and Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes Mascara with a pop of shimmer from Charlotte’s The Beautyverse Palette,’ says make-up artist Sofia Tilbury.

‘I instantly fell in love with the vintage black dress Kate had picked for tonight; it's so simple yet sexy and we wanted to mirror this, so I opted for a bold eye paired with Kate’s signature soft nude lip in order to balance the look,’ adds Tilbury.

With the bold, separated lashes also synonymous of some nostalgic style references (see: Twiggy), Tilbury kept the rest of her make-up pared back. ‘We accentuated Kate's cheekbones with Charlotte’s Hollywood Blush and Glow Glide to really illuminate the skin and enhanced her heart-shaped lips with Charlotte’s Iconic Nude Lip Cheat. Finally, I finished with Charlotte’s Rock Lips lipstick in Rocket Girl,’ she says. 'I also gave her Charlotte’s Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder and mini–Setting Spray for her handbag.'

Meanwhile, Moss’s hair was kept loose, with signature, beachy waves; another nod to the supermodel’s iconic style. A beauty-editor favourite, Sam McKnight Cool Girl Spray helped add texture and volume. 'It’s perfect for getting that effortless, tousled sexy style and it smells amazing,’ Moss tells us.

Kate Moss has been attending the Fashion Awards since her debut in the Nineties, where she has won Model Of The Year on multiple occasions. Has her approach to getting ready changed since the first time she attended the Fashion Awards? 'Sometimes, I love getting ready even more than the party itself,' she says. ‘I still love a classic look; glowing skin, a smokey eye finished with a feline flick and a nude lip today,' Moss tells us.

This year, the Cosmoss brand founder was joined by daughter Lila Moss (whose own attire payed tribute to her mother), and attended in support of make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury who received a Special Recognition Awards on the night.
