It pairs perfectly with cheese and apparently now nails, yes red wine-inspired manicures have been spotted backstage at the likes of Jason Wu and Oscar De La Renta this fashion week.

Not to be confused with the traditional brick red shade we've been sporting for decades, the red wine mani includes variations on the classic hue to suit a range of skin tones, and, we like to think, matches our choice of vintage too.

Taking nail art notes from AW20, we've perfectly paired your red wine of choice to its matching nail shade. Colour co-ordinated tips and tipples? Don't mind if we do. Think Rihanna carrying her glass of wine around with her but with a manicure that's nailed (sorry) the boozy colour scheme.

Merlot

If a glass of Merlot is your go-to, look no further than the nail shade used at Jason Wu's AW20 show.

Backstage, models had two coats of Deborah Lippmann's Nail Polish in the shade Single Ladies - £14.99 applied to fingertips.

With more of a purple undertone than a classic true red shade, this gives the perfect moody 'noir' feel without coming across as too much of a statement.

Pinot Noir

At Oscar De La Renta, dark red nails were paired with a brighter red lip to create a head-to-fingertip tonal make-up look.

Backstage, nail artist Miss Pop kept nails short with a rounded edge; classic, simple and most of all, practical. To get the look, Miss Pop applied a few coats of Zoya's Nail Polish in shade Alysaa - £11.70.

Bordeaux

The darkest of the red wine shades, Bordeaux, was spotted backstage at Rodarte.

While the models' outfits were all frills and florals and their hair wantonly curly, in contrast, their lips were painted a deep cool-toned purple and paired with 'vampy dark red nails' to add an unexpected gothic twist to the frothy collection.

Gamay

On the fruitier end of the red wine scale is Gamay - a paler red shade that in some lights almost looks like a dark rosé.

The candy apple red shade was sported by models backstage at Badgley Mischka, to add a hint of brightness to the almost entirely black runway collection.

Cabernet

Embracing Cabernet's more plummy notes, nail artist Rita Remark created a half moon design backstage at Brock Collection.

Sitting on the more purple end of the red wine scale, Remark's plum-hued negative space manicure was paired with a classic red lip given an AW20 twist - slightly smudged out and not too neat.

Remark used Essie's Nail Polish in Bahama Mama - £7.99 to create the look.

Malbec

Backstage at Prabal Gurung, nail artist Miss Pop opted for a curve along the half-moon shape at the bottom of models' nails in place of the traditional straight diagonal line.

Nails were kept long and rounded at the top with a bold cherry red shade to fill in the design, keeping half of the nail nude to create a negative space effect.

To replicate the look, ELLE loves Tom Ford's Nail Polish in Smoke Red - £32.
