'Festival fashion' doesn't have the best reputation, but there are ways to look stylish without falling victim to the flower crown, tassel fringing and crochet clichés - we promise.

The secret is in dressing for the setting, but still working with your own personal style and the latest trends. It may be a music festival, but you don't have to look like you've just stepped off the bus from Woodstock.

With a little pre-planning, you can have the perfect costume cocktail of practicality and style to see you through the season. Here are our top tips...

1. Pack one statement piece

Find a stand-out, on-trend separate that you can pair with a couple of things in your festival wardrobe. It'll mean that even on day three, when you're on the last dregs of your dry shampoo and you're sporting eye bags the size of your Gucci tote, you'll feel instantly pulled together.

2. Don't fear white

Granted, this is a better option for the likes of Coachella than for the rain-drenched fields of Glastonbury, but just as all-white is effortlessly cool on the city streets, so too can it look uber chic on the festival circuit. We love a logo tee tucked into a crisp white pair of skinny jeans. Add some interest with a fun-fur bag and pack some wellies just in case - because the quickest way to ruin the look is with mud-splattered calves.

3. Be bold in brights

Take your inspiration from Carnival with punchy brights. A bold summer dress paired with a headband (an accessory you'll thank us for) and some high tops will be both easy to wear and will look totally on point. Keep the accessories low-key or you'll veer into Carmen Miranda territory, though.

4. Invest in a kimono

The prettiest of pieces to up the ante on any look, add a silk kimono over denim shorts or jeans. We love it paired with a simple black polo neck as it avoids all the usual festival clichés and - bonus - you'll stay toasty warm if the temperature drops.

5. Opt for pastels

Sugary shades of lilac, lemon, mint green and pale pink have been a prevalent feature in the spring summer collections, and there's no reason they can't work at a festival too. As the antithesis to indie-festival-favourite Grunge, an all-pastel look stands out from the crowd.

6. Go Retro

A vintage tea dress, or one that looks vintage is your friend. Easy to throw on in even the most cramped tent, we'd pair ours with boho or vintage accessories, bar one of-the-moment item - like these cute pom-pom flip flops from UGG - to mix things up. We wouldn't want to be too predictable in our style choices, right?
