The unmistakable low, California drawl of supermodel Gigi Hadid bounds from the speakers telling Kansas-born designer Jeremy Scott he’s late for his own show. Not only that, his collection is far from finished, and he only has design sketches to hand for his scheduled Milan extravaganza.

So begins Moschino’s tongue-in cheek SS19 spectacular on Thursday night, that saw the Hadid sisters, Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber and more strut down the runway in life-size design sketches.

Commenting on the ‘never-ending' feeling of Fashion Week made up of pre-seasons, cruise collections and more, Scott told journalists he wanted to capture, ‘those moments of magic and inspiration when you’re working late'.

Referencing 80’s YSL silhouettes, sleek cocktail dresses were paired with jaunty boaters, elbow-length gloves, regal tights and pumps all scrawled upon as though to indicate what colour they were intended to be if Scott had 'finished' his collection.

The gradual move into evening wear in show became ever more meta, moving from crude scribbles to ensembles made-up from dressmaker’s tools themselves.

One model became a tailor’s dummy, her body snaked with an enormous, ruffled tape measure. Another dress was formed from giant dressmaking shears, while one dress - a reference to a design by the late great Franco Moschino - shimmied down the runway, bristling with tiered safety pins and a thimble hat.

Scott told journalists backstage: 'I tried to make it as if you were seeing a Broadway musical about the creation of fashion coming alive,’ and that it was - a Disney-esque bonanza of enchanted animated objects reminiscent of characters such as Lumière, Cogsworth, and Pinocchio from childhood.

All of these fantastical characters crescendoed to the final look, the traditional closing bridal gown.

Seemingly the only ‘finished' outfit (bar those shaded-in tights), Gigi Hadid’s puffball-skirted wedding dress came complete with a ethereal train of butterflies (niftily suspended by puppeteers).

This internet-breaking moment proved, without a doubt, that for all his humour, Scott certainly doesn't 'have a problem getting [his] work done'.
