Some girls just make their own dress codes. Think Cara Delevingne in top hat and tails amid a sea of fascinators and frock coats at Princess Eugenie's wedding.
In a world of identikit partygoers, be a Cara.
And this season in particular, where we saw an ‘80s revival, extreme clashing and sequin leopard print trouser suits for daytime on the catwalks, it’s all about being bold with your party wear.
We caught up with three women who never dress by the rules to find out what looks they'll be wearing this party season, featuring our edit of the new collection from V by Very.
Suit up for a big night
Mancunian blogger Megan is well known for her love of colour, power suits and vintage glam rock vibes.
"I love how British girls do nights out, often with a leather biker jacket or tough ankle boots paired with a party dress. I really love that juxtaposition.
I always like wearing a suit for party season - preferably something velvet, to up those festive vibes. A suit always makes me feel super strong and it’s something a little bit different.
I’m also going to be championing a bit of lilac this year, or pairing an oversized checked blazer with a sparkly brooch. I really like taking my favourite everyday pieces and making them work for nights out as well.
I don’t believe you need to go all out just because it’s party season. I prefer adding a touch of Christmas with indiscreet accessories, whether it’s sparkly socks and velvet platforms simply paired with jeans and a tee, or adding some pearl or crystal hair slides to your hair."
Be sexy without showing skin
Ada was born in Nigeria but now lives in Aberdeen. Her style is big on personality, colour and structured silhouettes.
"Party outfits doesn’t always have to be overly revealing. There are so many different ways to look fabulous and sexy on a night out.
I like to party in tailored pieces like a pant suit with bold statement earrings and dainty necklaces - that's my go-to. I have a real soft spot for blazers; I’m tempted to wear them with absolutely everything.
I don’t like rules - I just want to have a lot of fun with my clothes. My style is bold, adventurous and full of personality. This season, I'll also be trying a satin dress, paired with a matching faux fur scarf, big earrings and boots."
Mix prints with vinyl
London-based blogger Helina's style is athleisure meets modern minimal (think pared back print.)
"I absolutely love seeing all the sparkle around at Christmas time. There’s nothing wrong with a little festive cliché. Life's too short to worry about things like that.
I admire anyone who just owns their outfit. There’s no one person I look to for style inspiration, but anyone can look great when they rock things with confidence.
I’m loving all the satin/silk shirts and slip dresses around for this party season. They look elegant enough for evenings, but can be dressed down in the day with an oversized jumper and trainers. I also like the mix of texture and print around at the moment – the snakeskin prints mixed with vinyl and leather.
My one tip for elevating your going out look? A bold, vampy lip never fails."
