Lady Gaga's latest red carpet gown was another elegant choice in line with her previous refined award season looks - a sweeping white Dior gown, taken from the brand's spring/summer 2019 collection shown in Paris last week.

However, there was a subtle reference to the daring Gaga style of old - a pair of tiny white lace hotpants that peeked out from underneath her gown.

Gaga's floor-length white dress featured a plunging neckline with a cinched-in waist. The feathered, frayed edges are designed to symbolise an art piece that ages naturally with time. The voluminous gown featured a split which reached the waist to reveal a pair of tiny hotpants - not standard red carpet fare, but when in the hands of Dior Couture can't be wrong. On its own, the gown would have been a refined, glamorous choice that harked back to the Golden Age of Hollywood - the shorts added a sense of modernity that eschewed red carpet norms.

On the catwalk, the dress - which first appeared in Dior's circus-themed collection last week - was accessorised with an embellished fitted cap. Gaga decided against it for het SAGs look.

This is the first time that shorts have made it onto the red carpet this awards season. At the Golden Globes, Gemma Chan chose a deep teal halter neck dress by Valentino Couture that opened at her waist to reveal a pair of thigh-length shorts underneath.

Shorts are a key look for spring/summer 2019, as favoured by Stella McCartney, Chanel and Prada on the ready-to-wear catwalks. Although they were styled in various ways, the most popular approach was to layer under an oversized suit jacket or a cinched-in shirt.

But back to Lady Gaga. The star was nominated for Best Actress for A Star Is Born, but lost out to Glenn Close who won for her compelling performance in The Wife.
