If anything is going to convince you to give the clog another go, it's Dior and Elsa Hosk. The supermodel was spotted out in New York City this week wearing a pair of logo-printed wooden shoes by the French label which had us wondering, is the clog really set for a comeback?

Dior showed the shoes on the catwalk last year, leading many fashion experts to predict them as the next unlikely footwear trend – and Dior was not alone, Joseph and Marni also made a case for them for autumn/winter 2018, while Gucci and Miu Miu showed them for SS19 and Lanvin and Molly Goddard plugged them for AW19.

Clogs have been around since the Industrial Revolution, where they became popular in Holland as a work shoe and spread across Europe, but their origins actually date back to the Roman Empire. Of course, in more recent times, clogs peaked in popularity again in the 1970s and last really entered the zeitgeist in the early '00s when the Olsen twins and Alexa Chung championed them.

Of course, for some, clogs have never really gone out of style. Swedish Hasbeens remain one of the most divisive footwear brands out there, but boast plenty of high-fashion fans who have never stopped wearing them. Birkenstocks too – one of the pioneers of the 'ugly' shoe trend – released a pair of clog-inspired slipper shoes a few years ago, which have remained one of the label's key pieces.

While they seem a little out there, Hosk is proof that the clog does not have to look dowdy. The printed Dior pair teamed with white jeans and a linen blazer give them a low-key city look that pretty much anyone can pull off. Plus, there is no denying their comfort or their versatility in being worn year-round.
