Forget her roles in Little Women, The Circle and Harry Potter for a moment because we’re thinking Emma Watson could be a serious shoo-in for the next series of The Handmaid’s Tale, if her latest photoshoot is anything to go by.

On Tuesday, the 2020 Pirelli Calendar was finally released, with images shot by renowned fashion photographer Paolo Roversi under the theme ‘Looking for Juliet’.

In one image of the 29-year-old, the ‘self-partnered’ star can be seen posing against a grey stone wall wearing a strapless corset-like dress, with oversized white gloves and a white headscarf which is reminiscent of the bonnets worn in Margaret Atwood’s dystopian adapted novel, The Handmaid’s Tale.

In another snap of Watson, the actress is photographed in a stripped back setting, with her hair worn in loose, wet curls, a black T-shirt and gold hoop earrings.

In 2017, the actress interviewed Atwood about her book and asked her if she was ‘bored’ of being asked about its feminist tropes by journalists.

The writer said she wasn't but explained that she doesn't like to talk about feminism unless the interviewer explains what they mean by it.

‘Do we mean equal legal rights?’ she asked Watson during the interview for Entertainment Weekly. ‘Do we mean women are better than men? Do we mean all men should be pushed off a cliff? What do we mean? Because that word has meant all of those different things.’

The 2020 Pirelli Calendar by Paolo Roversi entitled ‘Looking for Juliet’.

According to the creators of the calendar, the project was inspired by the William Shakespeare drama Romeo and Juliet, and ‘the intersection of love, strength, youth and beauty embodied by its female protagonist’.

Roversi chose nine celebrities to interpret the role of Juliet for the calendar including British actresses Claire Foy and Mia Goth, American actresses Indya Moore, Yara Shahidi and Kristen Stewart, the Chinese singer Chriss Lee, the Spanish singer Rosalia, and the Franco-Italian artist Stella Roversi.

The models were asked by the photographer – who shot them in Paris and Verona over a week earlier this year – ‘to present the role of Juliet in an ideal casting session that sees them act, pose, sing; each through their own emotion, art form, personality, character and interpretation of the role’, according to a press release.

Speaking of his calendar, Roversi said: ‘I am still searching for my Juliet and I will be searching all my life. Because Juliet is a dream.’
