It’s that time of year again. Well, if you pay close attention to the fashion calendar that is.

Milan-based tyre company Pirelli have just announced the cast and concept of their 2019 calendar shot by British-born photographer Albert Watson.

The calendar tells the tales of four women ‘who are playing a movie character role’ and stars the likes of dancers Misty Copeland, Sergei Polunin, model Gigi Hadid and fashion designer Alexander Wang.

Working with Watson - who has shot the likes of Steve Jobs and Alfred Hitchcock and worked for beauty brands including Chanel and Prada - Hadid commands attention in several behind-the-scenes images from the shoot.

Dressed in a plunging champagne-coloured dress in one shot, the 23-year-old model sits on the window sill of an empty studio with the NYC skyline behind her.

In another photograph, the model lies on her stomach on a rug in front of Watson, before sitting alongside Wang and starring into the distance of a darkly-lit living room.

According to a press release from Pirelli, Gigi plays the role of a ‘wealthy and successful woman' who 'appears to have it all but there is sadness amongst her life’. Meanwhile, Wang is her ‘best friend and confidant’.

As well as Gigi, ballet dancer Misty Copeland ‘acts’ alongside dancer Calvin Royal III, whose storyline sees them ‘share the same dream of becoming stars'.

Misty plays the role of a dancer who works in a downtown strip-club and dances to support herself and has a boyfriend (Calvin).

‘Albert Watson seeks to narrate their journey, to understand the emotive power of their dreams, the turning points, the moments of victory and defeat, and how they faced each in turn,’ explains the press release.

The images were shot over a span of ten days in April in New York and Miami.

The calendar became an annual publication in 1963 but was discontinued in 1974. Ten years later, the magazine made its return and has been published every year since.

And we for one couldn't be happier.
