The Oscars 2019 was a feast of pink ruffle dresses, as it happens.

Considering the recent, extremely sad news, however, that Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld had passed away, we had expected a few more looks from the Parisian fashion house.

One actress who did use the red carpet at the 91st Academy Awards as an opportunity to pay her respects to the late designer, though, was Tessa Thompson.

The 35-year-old star of such movies as Thelma and television series' like Westworld, chose a dress from Chanel's Spring/Summer 2019 couture collection, which showed earlier this year in the French capital.

The Chanel dress isn't just a hat tip to Chanel, but the choice of black feels like a certain observance of the Lagerfeld mourning period.

The gold sequin accents on the dress, however, make it totally Oscars appropriate.

The actress complemented the Chanel look with relaxed, blown out waves and bronze-gold eyeshadow.
