Met Gala themes are always ripe for 'imaginative' interpretations. Fulfilment of this year's theme, for the Met Gala 2019, proved no less entertaining.
As we know, each year a different dress code is chosen as the theme of the evening to tie in with the exhibition opening. The theme for this year was 'Camp: Notes on Fashion', and was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay 'Notes on ‘Camp', which is widely believed to have brought the idea of 'camp' to the mainstream. 'The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration,' Sontag once explained in Partisan Review.
'Love of the unnatural' and observance of 'exaggeration' came in a range of brilliant forms this year - but more often than not, with lots of feathers and some pretty big shoulders.
Beyond that, though, interpretations of 'camp' were extremely varied. According to this year's Met Gala attendees, this is what 'camp' implies in 2019:
Spare Body Parts Are Camp
Fail to prepare, prepare for failure. So come with extra eyes, heads, faces, and teeth? Hey, you have to pay for healthcare in the US, so this could be practical.
Cameras Are Camp
Because what else about this get-up is camp, Frank? Unless you maxed out on conspicuous camp at your Paris Is Burning-themed 30th birthday party.
The Stage Is Camp
Lady Gaga came as a play in four parts, and Jordan Roth arrived in a theatre printed cape by Iris van Herpen. Theatre is camp.
Hat-Stands Are Camp
Rather than arrive wearing one hat, multiple hats were a 'Thing.' Who - what - but a hat-stand could've inspired that.
Twinning Is Camp
Case in point: Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke in Christopher Kane; Bette Midler and daughter Sophie von Haselberg, the spitting image of her legendary 'stage mom'; Kendall and Kylie Jenner. The Olsen twins are therefore inherently camp, so showed up subtly dressed in vintage Chanel.
Uterine Linings Are Camp
Too much? We're all advocating for women's rights and healthcare, so... Cardi B came in a Thom Browne interpretation of a uterine wall.
Home Furnishings Are Camp
Kim Kardashian called it, showing up to the Met Gala as a sofa in 2013. This year, frames, chandeliers, and glassware made appearances on the pink carpet. And, every single person who showed up in feathers (we stopped counting at 32) came ready to clean-up, doubling as dusters.
Fried Chicken Is Camp
Tiffany Haddish brought a baggie of fried chicken. 'There's not enough food!' she said. 'I brought chicken in my purse.' Important question: did she bring hot-sauce?
To conclude: whatever the hell you show up to a camp-themed gala carrying, or wearing, is camp, so decreed by us.
