Florence Pugh wowed the red carpet at the ELLE Style Awards tonight in a sheer white bridal-style dress by Alexander McQueen with a lace train and Tiffany & Co. jewellery.

The Oxford-born actor was being celebrated with the British Icon award at the event. Pugh accessorised her McQueen gown with pearl drop earrings. Speaking about her look on the red carpet, she told us: ‘When I have short hair, I really accentuate jewellery – big, bold jewellery.’

It’s not the first time Pugh has turned heads by wearing a sheer dress. At Valentino’s autumn/winter 2022 haute couture fashion show in July last year, she wore a sheer pink Valentino dress, reigniting the #FreeTheNipple movement in the process. Continuing the trend, Pugh wore a gossamer pale-blue Valentino gown at Paris Fashion Week this July.

The British star has faced backlash for her outfit choices, and called people out in a post on her Instagram about the controversy over ‘two cute little nipples’.

In her ELLE Style Awards cover interview, she said: ‘I speak the way I do about my body because I’m not trying to hide the cellulite on my thigh or the squidge in between my arm and my boob: I would much rather lay it all out.’

She continued: ‘I think the scariest thing for me are the instances where people have been upset that I’ve shown “too much” of myself. When everything went down with the Valentino pink dress a year ago, my nipples were on display through a piece of fabric, and it really wound people up.’

Pugh was on the red carpet with her friend, the designer Harris Reed. When asked about their relationship, she said: ‘Harris and I fell in love about a year ago, and it was one of those wonderful connections. He’s a true genius, talent and a creator. I feel very lucky that I get to be on Earth at the same time as him.’
