Whilst the annual nominee lunch went ahead as planned in Hollywood yesterday, we thought we were almost guaranteed a red carpet come 24 February. Which is why it came as a shock when it was announced today that the annual Vanity Fair Oscars bash would be cancelled.

"After much consideration, and in support of the writers and everyone else affected by this strike, we have decided that this is not the appropriate year to hold our annual Oscar party," said the magazine. "We want to congratulate all of this year’s nominees and we look forward to hosting our 15th Oscar party next year.”

The VF party is legendary, particularly as it plays host to all of those Hollywood stars not actually invited to the event itself and so Hollywood commentators have taken this as a worrying sign, will there really be resoultion to the strike in time? Sadly, it’s looking unlikely.
