Let's be honest - the Hermes Birkin may be a classic, the original it bag, but it's not exactly a bargain. With prices starting at over £4,000, not to mention an extensive waiting list, most of us won't be getting our hands on one any time soon unless we win the lottery. Or suddenly turn into Victoria Beckham - if rumours are to be believed the former Spice Girl has a collection of around 100 Birkins. But still, £4,000 seems positively affordable when you compare it to how much someone paid for one of the bags yesterday.
Jane Birkin, 1960s icon and the inspiration behind Hermes' most famous creation, has just auctioned off one of her own treasured bags. She was raising money to help the victims of Japan's earthquake, and this morning she must be feeling pretty pleased with herself - her offering went for a massive $160,000. Yes, you read that right. The auction was held on ebay so there's no details on who splashed out such a generous sum. Perhaps VB has been soing some online shopping to add to her collection...
