Also refreshing was contestant Rebecca Ferguson’s performance outfit, a vintage Ossie Clark number borrowed from Lily Allen’s Lucy in Disguise vintage boutique. The two-piece red crepe ensemble felt fit for a diva in the making.

As for the judges: Dannii, bravo for your elegant, roomy Gucci gown and those earrings – you do have a way with accessories.

And Cheryl, thanks for leaving those L’Oreal-endorsed locks loose this week. But now we need to have a little sit-down about your clothes. You’re a gorgeous girl. Why not give the crusted-on embellishment a rest and choose a simpler, more natural look than this Falguni and Shane Peacock frock next week? Aren’t you always telling contestants that the nation wants to see the ‘real you’? We feel the same way.
