The latest from the catwalks and front rows at NY Fashion Week: today Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schoul

At Proenza Schouler, design duo and darlings of Manhattan Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough showed us their vision for 2009 that was a new blend of their sexy signature style made modern and sporty for spring.

The sexy and sophisticated elements came in the sharply tailored suits and dresses and signature bra cut tops, and a sporty, tougher edge was added with jumbo zips, wide, eighties rounded shoulders and a handful of nippy jumpsuits that came in everything from buttery soft, black leather to white parachute nylon.

The colours were simple and sophisticated: cream, white and black highlighted with eighties electric blue, lime green and pillar box red, leather gloves.

In keeping with spring 2009’s other big themes so far, shoes were interesting and experimental featuring sculptural heels with screws and bolts.

Next up was the undisputed king of Manhattan, Marc Jacobs. This show is always a spectacle and last night was no exception. From the bank of paparazzi photographers waiting excitedly outside to the velvet rope that cordoned off the star studded front row – this show often feels like an awards ceremony-come-circus rather than a fashion show. Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham, Lauren Hutton, Sophia Coppola and Winona Ryder all managed to take their seats just in time for the highly anticipated show to start on time – almost 9pm on the dot.
