Remembering Eve Arnold - Marilyn Monroe's Greatest Photographer

Eve Arnold was a US photojournalist, most famous for taking some uniquely intimate portrait photographs of Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe. She died aged 99-years-old on the 4th January 2012.

Arnold was the first female photographer to become a full member of the storied Magnum agency in 1957.

Some of Arnold’'s most recognisable photographs stemmed from her work on the set of 1961’'s The Misfits, Monroe'’s final film. She snapped Monroe dancing with husband Arthur Miller, standing alone in the desert and laughing with her co-stars on set.

Arnold also photographed Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich and Isabella Rossellini, but cherished her extensive documentary projects in China and the Middle East as closely as her starrier archive.

‘Her intimate, sensitive and compassionate 10-year collaboration with Marilyn Monroe has cemented her as one of the most iconic portrait photographers of our time, but it is the long-term reportage stories that drove Arnold's curiosity and passion,’ the Magnum photo agency said.

Arnold moved to London in 1962 and was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen in 2003 for her services to photography.
