The latest teen star to have her face pulled from the advertising billboards is Hailee Steinfeld, whose controversial campaign with Miu Miu has set tongues wagging from the start due to the improbably young age of the starlet, and the impossibly high prices of the rather mature garments she wears in the campaign.

But for the Advertising Standards Authority, the tipping point was not what the 14 year old was wearing, but where she was sitting that resulted in the ad being pulled. In the offending photograph, Steinfeld is perched on a set of train tracks and appears to be crying (or, more likely, wiping a particle of dust from her eye).

The ASA deemed the ad to be irresponsible as it depicts a child in an unsafe location. Miuccia Prada argued that the actress was in no way bound to the spot, indeed she "could have easily moved from where she was sitting because she was not restrained in any way" but her argument was quelled.

It would appear that using an attractive teenager in your advertising campaign may be more trouble than its worth for designers. Marc Jacobs recently had the advertisement for his Oh, Lola! perfume - featuring a provocatively posturing Dakota Fanning - pulled for being too suggestive. However, courting controversy can also prove to be a canny move for brands: the controversy that exploded around Calvin Kleins use of 15 year old Brook Shields in the 1980 ad Nothing Comes Between Me and my Calvins helped catapult Klein to superstar status.

Perhaps, in fashion, Oscar Wildes cliché rings most true: The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about. ?
