Westwood's polite anarchism

Rumour had it that the Vivienne Westwood Gold Label show's doors were open to all. Following her anarchic bent, Westwood wanted everyone to experience this most globally popular of brands. At the best of times a Westwood show is crammed to the rafters with chancers trying to elbow their way in. So it was telling that giving open access made for the most refined and orderly of her shows we had encountered.

Set in the elegant ballroom of Le Grand Hotel International, a pianist played the models around the circular stage while champagne corks popped in the bar outside. Westwood's signature bodice-ripping dresses, Japanese prints and sequin stripe gowns were rightfully in place and cobweb knits, tablecloth checks and huge platforms drove home the rebel with a cause message. And the bride wore? A sequinned lace gown and flanked by two maids in lime lace with gold leaf garlands in their hair. The wedding party stormed the stage en masse with Andreas Kronthaler as proud groom.
