To celebrate her 30th birthday, Adele threw a party themed around one of her favorite movies: Titanic. But some fans thought throwing a party based on a real-life tragedy may not have been the most tasteful move.

Adele shared photos of the shindig Monday on Instagram, noting the party was to celebrate her “super fandom of the Titanic movie.” She dressed up as Kate Winslet’s character, Rose, and she and other guests danced while wearing life jackets. Other guests reportedly included British celebrities and music-industry vets, including Alan Carr, Zane Lowe, and Mark Ronson, plus Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul and his wife, Lauren.

Many fans thought the idea was hilarious and a fitting tribute to the James Cameron movie. After all, Adele has frequently thrown movie-themed parties, and this is just the latest in a string of movie homages.

But others weren’t so thrilled, saying it isn’t exactly funny to throw a party based on a massive tragedy where many people died. A total of 1,503 people died when the Titanic sunk on its maiden voyage in 1912.

This ended up starting a debate on social media, with fans telling those offended to simply lighten up.

Either way, it’s clear Adele’s passion for Titanic knows no bounds. Back in January, she met Celine Dion while wearing a shirt emblazoned with her face — and the ship.
