Congrats, Obamas! Over a year after Barack Obama exited the White House, he and Michelle have signed a multi-year agreement with Netflix in order to produce movies and series, according to CNBC. The deal includes scripted and unscripted series, which means the Obamas could produce anything from documentaries to shows.
In a statement, Barack said, "One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience. That's why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix – we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world."
According to a New York Times report from earlier this year, sources close to the Obama/Netflix partnership made clear that the former POTUS has no plans of creating any programs centered on or addressing President Trump and The White House. Instead, Obama wants to produce "shows that highlight inspirational stories."
Ted Sardano, Netflix chief content officer, said Barack and Michelle "are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better."
In January, Obama was the first guest for David Letterman's Netflix special My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, where Obama spoke about life after his presidency, fatherhood, and more.
