Stranger Things is making the leap into the world of comics to explore the Upside Down.

The team behind the Netflix series is partnering with Dark Horse Comics for a "a multi-year" series that will give fans a glimpse into the grim underworld in Hawkins, Indiana.

The first series of comics launch on September 26, and will fill in some gaps about what happened to Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) after he was sucked into the Upside Down in the first season.

Here's the official synopsis for the first story arc: "Stranger Things #1 (of four issues) follows Will Byers as he enters a dimension of decay and destruction where he must use his wits and resolve to dodge the pursuit of the Demogorgon and escape the Upside Down."

The creative team includes writer Jody Houser (Orphan Black), penciler Stefano Martino (Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor), inker Keith Champagne (The All New Atom), colourist Lauren Affe (The Ghost Fleet) and letterer Nate Piekos (Green Arrow).

"Dark Horse is known for championing stories and storytellers," the company's president, Mike Richardson, said. "We are so excited to work with Netflix to bring the world of Stranger Things to comics."

Netflix is continuing to expand the mythology of Stranger Things beyond the TV series. It was recently announced that a series of spin-off novels about the origin of Eleven's mother is in the works too.

The streaming giant also confirmed last month that it is partnering with Telltale on a console game that will allow players to explore the Upside Down.

The third season of Stranger Things is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2019.
