Avengers: Infinity War star Scarlett Johansson has hit back at claims that she 'auditioned' to be Tom Cruise's girlfriend.

The allegations stem from an interview with a former Scientologist, Brendan Tighe, who claimed that he came across a report by mistake while he was a member of Cruise's Scientology security unit.

He alleged from the report that women had auditioned to be Cruise's girlfriend following his split from Nicole Kidman, among them Johansson.

'Another actress, Erika Christensen, had to disconnect from Scarlett Johansson because that didn't go well,' he said on Megyn Kelly Today. 'That was in that report.'

However, Johansson has strongly denied Tighe's allegations, saying in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: 'The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning.

'I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships. Only a man aka Brendan Tighe would come up with a crazy story like that.'

Digital Spy has reached out to Cruise's representatives for comment.

The Church of Scientology also strongly denied Tighe's claims regarding his relationship with Cruise in a statement to Megyn Kelly Today.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, Johansson revealed she had been pushing for more diversity in superhero movies, both in front of and behind the camera.
