Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux announced their separation back in February 2018. In a joint statement which they released to the Associated Press, Aniston and Theroux revealed that the decision to break up was 'mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year.'

Having remained silent on the matter until now, Theroux has just opened up for the first time about his split from Aniston. In an interview with The New York Times, Theroux has revealed that he's still friends with his ex, and that they're finding a new normal for their friendship.

According to Theroux, he's still on good terms with the Friends actress: 'The good news is that was probably the most—I’m choosing my words really carefully—it was kind of the most gentle separation, in that there was no animosity.' Despite going through an extremely public breakup, Theroux seems to have nothing but respect for his former wife.

And as for moving forward, the Maniac star is trying to keep life as normal as possible. Theroux explains, 'Neither one of us is dead, neither one of us is looking to throw hatchets at each other. It’s more like, it’s amicable. It’s boring, but, you know, we respected each other enough that it was as painless as it could be.'

Back in August 2018, Aniston told InStyle, 'the misconceptions are "Jen can’t keep a man," and "Jen refuses to have a baby because she’s selfish and committed to her career." Or that I’m sad and heartbroken. First, with all due respect, I’m not heartbroken.'

However, Theroux doesn't mirror Aniston's sentiment that she's 'not heartbroken,' revealing instead that, 'It was heartbreaking.'

Clarifying his thoughts, Theroux iterated that the breakup was heartbreaking but 'only in the sense that the friendship would not be the same, as far as just the day to day. But the friendship is shifting and changing, you know, so that part is something that we’re both very proud of.'

Theroux and Aniston started dating in 2011, after they'd finished filming the movie Wanderlust together. They got engaged in 2012, and married in 2015.
