There has been a surge in children being named after First Lady Melania and first daughter Ivanka Trump. Popularity has increased by 362 per cent for Ivanka and 227 per cent for Melania since 2015, according to a review of Social Security Administration data by AreaVibes.
Whereas Ivanka’s sister's name, Tiffany, declined by 17 per cent, Barron, rose by 90 per cent. Donald dropped by 11 per cent and Eric went down by six per cent.
Last year, 164 baby girls were named Ivanka and 191 girls were called Ivana, which actually her real name as she was named after her mother - Ivanka is just a nickname.
Melania was the fifth fastest rising girl name last year with 283 baby girls sharing the name with the First Lady. The name increased by 720 places and then entered the top 1,000 at 930th place.
Pamela Redmond Satran, cofounder of Nameberry.com, told Refinery29 why the name has gained popularity: “It’s got the ingredients to be a popular name apart from the influence of Mrs. Trump: It’s both familiar and exotic, and is similar to some recent names that became more visible and more popular, like Malia.”
Social Security data showed that “Sasha” and “Malia” gained popularity during the Obama administration, which isn’t uncommon.
