Emma Watson might not have attended the Golden Globes last night where many actresses supported Time's Up through a simple accessory, but she toasted the first anniversary of the movement through Instagram instead.

The actress, who is a long-standing feminist activist, thanked everyone who has contributed to Time's Up over the past 12 months "from my sisters in the film industry to the activists and campaigners around the world who have supported us". She said that the progress of the organisation has given her hope for gender equality.

"I've been so inspired by the way people have reached out to each other, shared experiences and advice, and organised together as part of this movement for change," she said.

"Gender equality can only become a reality if we harness the transformative power of solidarity across professions and across borders," she continued. "There’s still a long way to go, but the achievements so far make me optimistic for a fairer future. 2018 was just the beginning."

Time's Up aims to end workplace sexual harassment and assault through a legal defence fund, which helps connect victims with lawyers to bring their perpetuators to justice. The campaign's latest goal is to "double the number of women in leadership and across other spaces where women are underrepresented".

Watson feels added responsibility to show solidarity with victims of assault and harassment given her high profile.

"I feel we have a mandate to speak up," Watson told CNN. "If we, with all our privileges, platforms and protections don’t call this out, then how can we expect others to? There’s still a long way to go, but I feel more optimistic now that we have new tools and mechanisms in our industry to protect and safeguard people from harassment and abuse."
