The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are encouraging their Instagram followers to get behind Leonardo DiCaprio's mission to fight climate change.

Each month, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry choose Instagram accounts which champion a certain social cause they wish to shine a light on.

It started in May with individuals and groups who are doing important things in the field of mental health, then in June the Sussex Royal account switched to promoting LGBTQ+ organisations to mark Pride month.

For July, the social cause the royal couple are backing is environmental care and awareness.

In a post on Instagram, Prince Harry said: 'Environmental damage has been treated as a necessary by-product of economic growth... Only now are we starting to notice and understand the damage that we've been causing. With nearly 7.7 billion people inhabiting this Earth, every choice, every footprint, every action makes a difference'.

One of the accounts the royal couple are urging followers to visit 'for more details on how you can make great change and help save our planet' is the Leonardo DiCaprio foundation.

The Oscar-winning actor established his foundation in 1998 with the aim of protecting 'the world's last wild places' and bringing attention to the conservation of our wildlands and oceans, climate change, indigenous rights and more.

Over the years DiCaprio, who is also a UN Messenger of Peace for Climate Change, has announced funds for environmental projects, partnered with National Geographic for the climate change focused film Before The Flood and helped to lobby the end of the ivory trade in Thailand.

The environmentalist fuses his activism with his work too. When DiCaprio won his Oscar for The Revenant in 2016, he devoted a large part of his acceptance speech to stressing that 'climate change is real' and to support the indigenous people across the world.

As well as the LDF, the royal couple also lent their support to teenage climate change activist and school striker Greta Thunberg, the National Geographic Instagram page, the WWF Foundation, the African Parks Network and the Rhino Conservation in Botswana.
