Meghan Markle and Prince Harry christened their baby boy, Archie, in a family baptism today in Windsor.

The first pictures have now been released and shared on the couple's Instagram page showing the proud parents cooing over their adorable baby.

A simple black and white photo, taken in the Rose Garden at the castle, shows Archie being cradled by his mother while his father, the Duke of Sussex, places a tender hand on the Duchess' arm.

A second image taken in the castle's Green Drawing Room - where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's official wedding pictures were also taken - was also released by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of the family who attended today's christening.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are to the right of Meghan in the photo while Charles' wife the Duchess of Cornwall sits to Harry's left.

A caption on the photos said the royal couple are 'so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son.

'They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment,' the message said. 'Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie.'

The photos were taken by Chris Allerton, who was also behind the lens of the sweet black and white picture of Archie meeting his great-grandparents Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip for the first time. This was also the photo posted to the Sussex' Instagram page formally announcing the newborn's name.

For the christening, Meghan reportedly wore a cream Dior dress, accessorised with a hat, while Kate opted for a Stella McCartney blush pink dress and headband.

Archie was christened in the handmade replica of the official royal christening robe which was also worn by all three Cambridge children - George, Charlotte and Louis - at their christenings.

The small private ceremony took place in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle today with only a handful of guests.

Archie was christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby in the service. In keeping with the tradition of royal christenings, the two-month-old was baptised by holy water from the River Jordan at the Lily Font - which dates back to 1840 and is used at every royal christening.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not released the name of Archie's godparents, choosing to keep their choices private.
