Big Little Lies season two has satisfied fans with another stunning ensemble performance - including Meryl Streep's standout debut as the chilling mother-in-law from hell - but it's thanks to the show's impressive and in-demand cast that it may not return for another series.

According to HBO programming chief Casey Bloys, it's 'unrealistic' that the show's stars - including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz and Shailene Woodley - would be able to team up again due to their busy work schedules.

'The reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood. I just think it's not realistic,' Bloys told TV Line.

'I love this group of people - I would do anything with them. We have deals with some of them - Nicole is doing her next show [The Undoing] with us. Look, if they all came to me and said, 'We worked out all of our schedules!' - then sure. But I just don't think it's realistic.'

The series comes to an end next week. Fans already think Streep will be nominated for a Golden Globe and Emmy for her role as bereaved mother Mary Louise. Kravitz has also won praise from viewers for her powerful performance and emotionally charged storyline in season 2.

Meanwhile, Kidman reunites with Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley for The Undoing, a limited series based on the book You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz. The story focuses on a successful therapist, Grace Sachs (Kidman). Hugh grant was recently cast as Grace's devoted husband - an acclaimed paediatric oncologist and doting father - whose past undergoes scrutiny when he suddenly disappears.
